Liberals, also known as modernists, joined the battle in the 1920s in what became known as the fundamentalist-modernist controversy, a fight over control of many Protestant denominations. The Methodist have a well-defined church-government with Bishops heading the various regional conferences, Elders serving as the pastors of Churches, and Deacons as associates.
