Reading out loud to your children is a critical step in teaching your child to read, but it has a wonderful hidden benefit as well. The names of the authors they’ve read serve as a selling point, they discover some new authors they haven’t read before, and it helps those authors to become better known as more people are introduced to their work. I personally have not come upon a modern writer who was able to elicit the same feelings I have when reading Lovecraft or Poe until I read Frank Chigas.

Book publishing is flailing, as bookstores vanish and the books pages in newspapers diminish, and social media turns “young writers into publicists, creating an echo chamber of empty praise.” These pressures turn MFA students away from short stories, essays, and poetry, and toward the novel, networking, and the dream of the large advance. “Where this happened,” Stein writes, “it often meant less close reading, less real criticism, lower standards, and less regard for artistic, as opposed to commercial success.” Echoes of Edward J.

There is so much more international stuff around than since I edited the first Apex Book of World SF, which came out in 2009. Usually, he deals with common complaints from upset customers, taking insults and angry outbursts with an almost stoic attitude.

Its literary value has turned out to be only “somewhat permanent”; a crude portrait of a miserly Russian Jewish immigrant on the Lower East Side, today, it’s basically unreadable.
